Bernann McKinney couldn’t bear the thought of living without her late pit bull, Booger — the heroic hound saved her life when she was attacked by another dog, and became her lifeline during a prolonged, arduous recovery.
And now, as she showed exclusively on TODAY, she believes she doesn’t have to.
The California woman is the ecstatic new owner of five puppies derived from tissue from her beloved pooch, which died two years ago. It’s a landmark case: the first successful commercial cloning ...

For the first time, scientists have implanted a prosthesis that will allow them to directly fuse an artificial leg into a dog’s bone, a procedure that could foster a breakthrough in designing next-generation artificial limbs for humans.
In the four-hour operation Thursday at the North Carolina State University Veterinary School, Denis Marcellin-Little, an associate professor of veterinary orthopedics, fused a titanium implant onto what was left of the leg bone of Cassidy, a 5-year-old German s...

Now she is happy, minus $50,000 and her house, and owner of five cloned Booger puppies.

Two Saudi men seen Thursday in Riyadh outside a pet show were violating a religious edict against walking pets.
Every single man knows: Walking a dog in the park equals sure babe magnet. Saudi Arabia's Islamic religious police, in their zeal to keep the sexes apart, want to make sure the technique doesn't catch on here.
The solution: Ban selling dogs and cats as pets, as well as walking them in public.
The prohibition went into effect on Wednesday in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, and authoriti...

Talk about New Jersey’s fat cats.
A 44-pound feline was found waddling around Saturday without a collar in Voorhees, and officials at the Camden County Animal Shelter hope she gets a nice — hopefully, diet-friendly — home.
“She’s built like a quarterback,” said Deborah Wright, a shelter volunteer and current foster owner of the kitty. “I mean, how do you lose a 44-pound cat?!”
Shelter officials are calling the porky cutie “Princess Chunk.”
The largest tabby on record weighed 46 po...

For years we’ve taken our dogs to our friend Gregg’s house for an Independence Day celebration that stretches late into the night. His hilltop home offers a view of fireworks displays from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., all the way to Long Beach. But these days we leave before the fireworks begin. The rockets’ red glare and bombs bursting in air send our dog Twyla into a frenzy of fearful shaking.
Fortunately, Twyla’s fear of fireworks is relatively mild. Dogs with noise phobias trigger...

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - A zookeeper's house cat has adopted a baby red panda abandoned by its mother and is nursing the cub along with her own kittens, the Artis zoo said Wednesday.
The panda's mother rejected her two cubs after they were born on June 30.
"She left them there, lying in the cold," said zoo spokesman Bart Kret.
The zoo initially kept the cubs in an incubator. But a keeper's tabby cat had just given birth to four kittens, and let the two panda cubs join the crowd.
